On Wednesday, Facebook launched Instagram Reels, an app that allows users to record 15-second clips set to music, editing the clips by adding effects and filters.

The announcement was posted on blog posts from Instagram and Facebook.

“Reels gives people new ways to express themselves, discover more of what they love on Instagram, and help anyone with the ambition of becoming a creator take center stage,” Instagram said in the blog post.

This is not the first time Facebook has made a move to remove a competitor from the social media space. In August of 2016, Instagram launched its ‘Stories’ tool on the platform as a direct response to the growing popularity of Snapchat. Over the years, the stories feature on Instagram has become very popular among its users.

Today, Facebook again has decided to respond against another rising social media company TikTok, to compete in the popular social video sharing space.

This new addition to the Instagram platform comes when TikTok has begun to have troubles in its U.S market.

According to Reuters, President Trump is allowing Microsoft to pursue an acquisition of the app within 45 days before being banned from the country. This continues as tensions rise between China and the U.S. over economic policies and concerns over the coronavirus.
